Self-Drive Bird Tours South Africa

'Do it Yourself' Trips are becoming increasingly popular with visitors who prefer to travel at their own pace and enjoy their own company. South Africa's excellent roads and infrastructure and the plethora of good literature and website information make this an easy but not always a less expensive option.

In our experience, published birding information goes out of date quickly, and does not necessarily give the client the best advice with regard to itinerary planning. So if you want to travel independently AND want to get the most out of your trip...

We offer a full trip planning and booking service which will take the hassle out of your visit. Our local knowledge is borne of years of experience in the field, current birding activity and our network of birding and other contacts around the country.

And if you start your journey with us at our superb Simon's Town accommodation facility, we will add to any travel plans you may have made with free advice and logistical support for onward travel, site guides and hand drawn maps for special localities, and our personal safari recommendations to ensure you have a wonderful trip.

Site Guides : Some endemic species can be notoriously difficult to find and a local guide for a day or two can often add enormous benefit to your birding success and enjoyment of the area. We can make these recommendations and bookings based on our intimate knowledge of the area. Supporting local guiding services along the way adds an additional element of pleasure and success to the trip on top of which the guiding fee supports local communities and benefits the immediate environment.

What our clients have to say about Avian Leisure's planning & booking service:

'A nice balance of activities Service first rate throughout!'
Graham & Judith Williams, Wales

'We have very happy memories of a glorious holiday and much appreciated your excellent planning'

Rob & Meg Shorland-Ball, England

'Wonderful accommodation and perfect birding directions. I will especially remember your detailed maps! Plus a dream come true pelagic seabird trip'

- Richard Hell: MA, USA

'Thanks to Pat's directions, we had some of our most memorable sightings on our last full day in South Africa'
- Arnoud van den Berg: Netherlands

'The Cardwell's have two smashing self-catering apartments under their Simon's Town home, but what we really liked on our pincer-movement, was that they offer so very much more than that. Patrick is a naturalist and there is nothing he doesn't know about his surroundings and that's the whole of South Africa, not just Simons' Town, whether it's a bird-watching tour from the Zimbabwe border to the Garden Route coastline or a detailed search for Northern Cape lizards, he's your man. '
- Greenwood Guide to South Africa, Namibia & Mozambique

We have put together self-drive trips in response to specific requests.   For each each of these we proposed an  itinerary
based on the client's brief,   then handled all bookings and presented the clients with a folder of vouchers and directions.

Dec '06 - a Canadian couple: serious bird 'listers' doing a self drive trip in the Northern & Western Cape. Their quest: as many birds as possible in a 3 week period
March '07 - a Welsh couple: since the husband was a birder and the wife not, it was a mixed interest tour including the battlefields in Kwazulu Natal, a trip up Sani Pass in the Drakensberg and a drive from Port Elizabeth back to Cape Town along the Garden Route
Sept '06 - a family group with mixed interests ranging from birding and wine, to horse-riding and farming
Dec '06 - a British couple interested in general wildlife and birds, from the dung beetle to the African Elephant: the first half of the trip was fully guided in the north of South Africa and the last half was self drive along the Garden Route and in Cape Town
