WHO ARE WE ?

Patrick Cardwell

Birding has been an all consuming passion of mine since boyhood days in rural surroundings. Armed with an introductory bird book and an inexpensive pair of binoculars I embarked on what has proved to be an enduring and intense interest for over 40 years. During this time I enthusiastically indulged in tape recording, bird photography, bird banding and regional distribution assessments throughout Southern Africa as part of the S.A. Bird Atlas Project. Such activity provided me with a detailed insight as to the precise location of many endemics and the ability to provide visiting birders with exclusively tailored itineraries covering specified needs from 'relaxed' to 'intensive' in detail. Over the years my interest in nature has expanded significantly and I hold the Field Guide of South Africa accreditation for Levels 1 to 3 and an Honourary Specialist Knowledge & Skills Birding qualification as well as Bird Life South Africa's specialist guide endorsement for all provinces. To date I have personally seen over 870 of Southern Africa’s 900 or so bird species. The balance comprising of vagrants to our area are still on my wanted list!

Marie Louise Cardwell

My love of the Bushveld with its multi-faceted mix of birding delights and a highly analytical and structured approach to business (my background is Management in the IT Industry with BSc and MBA degrees) have combined to provide the meticulous level of detail associated with the hand-crafted proposals individually prepared by myself in response to enquiries received. As such the 'personal touch' is a hallmark of what I believe Avian Leisure has to offer in providing a 'one stop' travel package covering specialist birding and wildlife safaris as our principal offering with culture and wine tours for variation. Nothing pleases me more than positive feedback from satisfied clients that have stayed at Avian Leisure and experienced a highly successful safari rich in superb sightings and enjoyable throughout as a lasting memory and as good a reason as any to book through me again and again ...
