Similar in appearance to Pipits, but noticeably larger and more colourful and usually located in closely bonded pairs as they stride about purposely in search of insects as the main prey form.
All three have distinctly different preferred habitat types with little in the way of geographic overlap within the sub-region.
Cape Longclaws, with their orange to yellow throat patches, favour short grassland and vlei surrounds within the central part of South Africa as well as suitable open areas within the ‘fynbos’ biome of the Southern Cape.
Rosy-throated Longclaws prefer low altitude areas of water-logged grassland and pan surrounds within wetland systems.
Yellow-throated Longclaws, favour lush grassland dotted about with smaller trees and bushes for perching within higher rainfall savanna areas in the east of the country, such as the Kruger Park.
